Kernels lead Wisconsin in 4th, 4-3 (suspended)

Jul. 4, 2010 6:06 pm
The undermanned grounds crew couldn't get the tarp completely on the field as it downpoured in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cedar Rapids had rallied to take a 4-3 lead.
Because of that, this game has been suspended and picked up Monday at 5:30. A regularly scheduled game of seven innings will come after the suspended game.
Do you think the parent L.A. Angels would have been happy to see mega-prospect Mike Trout and some of the other Kernels players hit the field to help pull tarp? Oh, boy.
"We were just trying to help," Trout said.
"We were just trying to get that tarp on fast so we could finish this game," said Kernels outfielder Matt Long. "But they got a lot of water on it pretty quickly."
Kernels Manager Bill Mosiello didn't seem to have any problem with it. What are the odds a guy injures his back or breaks an ankle pulling tarp, right?
"There are a lot of things to worry about other than worrying about something like that," he said.
It's a Fourth of July encounter between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The starting pitcher matchup is Garrett Richards (6-4, 3.69 ERA) against Maverick Lasker (5-3, 2.91).
Wisconsin jumped on Richards for five hits and three runs in the top of the first inning. The barrage included three doubles: a two-run two-bagger by Hunter Morris and an RBI double from Chris Dennis.
Cedar Rapids (48-29, 5-4) got a solo home run down the right-field line leading off the third from Matt Long and have taken the lead with a three-run fourth. Michael Wing walked leading off and scored on Justin Bass' triple down the first-base line. A Jon Karcich sacrifice fly tied the game.
Tyler Mann then doubled into the right-field corner with one out, Mike Trout walked and Long singled to left-center.
