Local grown, fresh picked sweet corn will be the center of attention at tonight's Washington Farmers' Market. The weather prediction for the 5 p.m. start looks good -- partly sunny, just enough summer sun for the leafy canopy in Central Park to showcase its cooling shade.
Midwest bounty is on display; crisp cucumbers, vine ripened tomatoes, new potatoes, beets, green beans, onions, summer squash, and peppers share tables with pie cherries, black raspberries and even mulberries. Fresh baked culinary treasures include fruit pies, yeast breads, sweet rolls, cookies, cupcakes, donuts, a variety of bars and quick breads, all ready for instant or delayed gratification.
Each week the statements of "Oh, I forgot my knives, or scissors, or garden hoe, or saw blades" as people pass the sharpeners table. Well, Here's your remender: Bits N More is at the Farmers' Market to sharpen any of your tools, and the service comes with the keen honed wit of the sharpener at no extra charge.
The last two markets in Washington have been magnificent, organizer Bob Shepherd reports: weather, summer produce, toe tapping music and a social crowd have combined to produce an atmosphere of enjoyment that's pure rural Midwest at its finest.
You can find plenty of farmers markets in the area over the next few days as well.
