Linn-Mar's Bohannon commits to UNI

Jul. 9, 2010 4:55 pm
OK, it's down to little brother, Jordan, now.Linn-Mar guard Matt Bohannon gave a verbal commitment Friday afternoon to play college basketball in 2011-12 at the University of Northern Iowa.Bohannon is a 6-foot-4 guard who will be the third member of his family to play D-I basketball. Oldest brother, Jason, just finished a fine career at Wisconsin and brother, Zach, will be a sophomore at Air Force. Jordan Bohannon is 12 years old, by the way, and is the last Bohannon brother. Word on the street is he might be the best one of them all."I talked to both of my (older) brothers during the recruiting process," Matt said. "They've both gone through it, obviously. They told me just to make the decision that was best for me. They told me 'You'll know when it's right.'"Bohannon is in the midst of a hectic week in which his AAU team is playing games in Chicago, Milwaukee and Orlando, Fla. He said his recruiting had picked up recently, with an offer coming earlier this week from the University of San Diego. But he said his final two schools were UNI and Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton. Bohannon helped Linn-Mar to a third-place finish at the 2010 Class 4A state tournament by averaging a team-high 17.9 points per game.Known as a good outside shooter, he had a team-best 128 3-pointers."Matt actually kept (his recruiting thoughts) to himself for the most part," said Gordy Bohannon, Matt's dad and a former quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes. "In the end, he wanted to stay home." "There had been a lot more interest coming in," Matt said. "But I knew UNI was the right place for me."Northern Iowa, fresh off a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament, also recently got a commitment from 6-foot-6 Twin Cities swingman Marvin Singleton.
