WWII II vet says thanks for memorable trip

As one of the 98 World War II veterans who were selected to go on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, I would like to thank everyone involved in the time and money spent to send us to Washington, D.C. It was a very touching and joyous trip.
The reception in D.C. with so many troops and civilians cheering us was overwhelming. After I saluted the Two Star General at the line, my emotions got the best of me. There were so many ladies, young and old, hugging us and patting us on our backs. It was a very touching and emotional time. We were escorted by our guides and guardians on a very hot and humid day to view all of the monuments and graves. Gov. Chet Culver and Sen. Chuck Grassley visited with us. The day was one I will never forget. It brought back so many memories, both good and bad.
Thank you all, Hy-Vee, our local television stations, The Gazette and everyone who donated time and money for this event. A special recognition to Mary Clapp and all of her staff who worked so hard to organize our day, and to Michael Cline, my group's personal guide. Michael, like all of the escorts, paid $500 to go on the trip and be our personal escort. Michael is a former Marine and one of the nicest young men I have ever met.
