Joan McCalmant is extremely knowledgeable and a proven leader in her profession as Linn County Recorder. During the flood of 2008, Joan organized the evacuation and rescuing of hundreds of historical real estate, birth, death and marriage record books from the basement of the old Linn County Administration Office Building. Her staff looked to her for leadership and guidance during the extraction of damaged items that could not be removed before the flood. Joan was there for her staff and the citizens.
Joan was hired in 1986 as a deputy recorder, appointed to the position as recorder in 1997 and has been elected to the position ever since. She has served as co-chair of the County Records Land Information System, a committee that was instrumental in creating a statewide portal for Iowa real estate information, which now allows users to search statewide for real estate records. It became the first-in-the nation statewide electronic recording system.
Joan is serving as elected president of the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers, an international organization educating and empowering local government officials to run their offices more efficiently and effectively.
Joan's 24 years of experience in the Recorder's Office, her leadership abilities, attention to detail and customer service and the respect she has earned from her staff and colleagues makes her the clear choice for recorder.
