Sweeney plays, helps Jeff topple Waterloo West

Shortstop Kellen Sweeney hit a three-run home run in his first game in over a month as Cedar Rapids Jefferson knocked off Waterloo West in a Class 4A substate first-round baseball game Friday night at West, 12-5.Sweeney was a second-round draft pick of the
">Toronto Blue Jays in early June and has been practicing but not playing for the J-Hawks during contract negotiations. This was just his 11th game this season and his first since June 7.Jefferson will host Marshalltown in a substate semifinal Monday at 7.In other Class 3A and 4A postseason games Friday:
MARION 5, BENTON COMMUNITY 3 - Zach Nielsen had an RBI single in the first inning to get Marion going, while Austin Weisinger added two hits and an RBI to lead Marion (24-12) to the win at Williamsburg. The Indians play a district final Monday at Williamsburg.
C.R. KENNEDY 11, DAVENPORT NORTH 2
LINN-MAR 10, CLINTON 4- Tyler Kruse and Ben Tallman each had two doubles and two RBIs to help lead Linn-Mar to the win at Clinton. Jordan Atwater added a two-run double, while Ben Larison tallied a two-run single for the Lions (14-21). L-M plays Monday at Bettendorf.- Austin Christensen had three hits and an RBI to lead Cedar Rapids Kennedy to the win at home. Devin Jacobus added a two-run single in the sixth inning, while David Yancey tallied three hits and an RBI for the Cougars (28-10). Kennedy advances to a substate final Wednesday at home.
C.R. WASHINGTON 5, DAVENPORT CENTRAL 3 - Dakota Freese struck out 10 as Washington upset the fifth-ranked team in Class 4A at Davenport. Washington travels to Davenport West for a substate semifinal Monday.
