Seven escape apartment fire in Hiawatha
Emergency responders spent Sunday morning on the scene of a fire at a four-unit apartment building at 205 Pirie Drive. The call to respond came in just after 3:30 a.m.
Pirie Drive is just off Robins Road, between Center Point and Boyson Roads, and close to Nixon Elementary School.
Hiawatha Fire Chief Mike Nesslage said that seven people were in the two-story apartment building at the time. “When we got here, the fire was pretty extensive coming out of the ground floor apartment and then extending all the way up into the roof and actually coming out of the roof upon our arrival,” said Nesslage.
Nesslage said there are no injuries to report and investigators say the Red Cross will assist people affected.
