West Nile virus activity was confirmed this week by the State Hygienic Laboratory in a sentinel chicken from Linn County. West Nile virus is endemic in Iowa and activity usually peaks in late summer and early fall.
Iowa State University Medical Entomology reports that they are detecting higher levels of Culex tarsalis and Culex pipiens group mosquitoes (the primary vectors of WNV) this week than seen in previous weeks.
The most effective way to prevent West Nile virus is to stop mosquitoes from breeding and from biting, prevention measures include:
- Use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always read the repellent label and consult with a health care provider if you have questions when using these types of products for children.
- The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many species of mosquitoes. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during evening and early morning hours.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, and socks whenever possible outdoors.
- Eliminate standing water around the home because that's where mosquitoes lay eggs. Empty water from buckets, cans, pool covers and pet water dishes. Change water in bird baths every three to four days.
