Little Hawks wrestling coach arrested for OWI

Current Iowa City High and former Lisbon head wrestling coach Brad Smith was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol on July 2, 2010 in Coralville. The operating while intoxicated charge is a serious misdemeanor, according to the arrest report.Smith, 56, is accused of driving south in the northbound lanes of Highway 965 between Commerce Drive and Holiday Road. When Smith was stopped, he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and impaired balance, according to the arrest report, which also noted that Smith admitted to drinking before he was stopped at 12:07 a.m.Smith failed sobriety tests and refused additional testing. According to the arrest document, Smith failed a breath test, blowing .241, which is more than three times the legal limit of .o8 for blood-alcohol content.A phone message was left on Smith's cell phone Monday afternoon and has not been returned, and a phone call to the residence was unanswered.Smith has been the wrestling coach at City High the last 19 seasons, taking over the Little Hawks program after guiding Lisbon through the 1991 season. He ranks second all-time with 10 traditional state team titles, tailing only legendary coach Bob Siddens by one. He also stands second all-time with five state duals championships, trailing Don Bosco's Tom Kettman, who won his seventh in February.Smith led Lisbon to traditional titles in 1980, 19882, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1990, when he was named national high school coach of the year. He also copached the Lions to consecutive duals titles in 1987-88 and then again in 1990. The Little Hawks won a traditional state title in 1992 and then swept traditional and duals state crowns in 1999 and 2002 under Smith.Smith, a letterwinner for the University of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling program from 1973-76 and 142-pound NCAA champion in 1976, coached both four-time Iowa high school state champions Scott Morningstar of Lisbon (1977-80) and Jeff McGinness of City High (1990-93) to their last two prep state titles. Prior to the 2010 season, Smith, a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, ranked third all-time in dual victories, posting a 426-119 career mark.
