Some stats and notes from Saturday's open scrimmage.
Buckle down from here. This is it until coach Kirk Ferentz talks Aug. 31, the Tuesday of Eastern Illinois week. It's too bad that it'll be so long without an update, but that's how it goes.
Iowa has another week in the Marriott. I believe this Friday will be the last day there. Then, it's another week of practice before the clock starts for Eastern the week of Aug. 30.
Field goals
Trent Mossbrucker -- 8 of 11 with misses from 41 left hash (wide left), 41 right hash (wide right) and 23 left hash (wide left).
Daniel Murray -- 8 of 12 with misses from 41 center (wide left), 46 left hash (line drive, left and short), 45 left hash (wide left) and 42 left hash (blocked by Adrian Clayborn).
Mike Meyer -- 7 of 11 with misses from 41 center (wide left), 41 center (wide right), 46 left hash (line drive, left and short) and 23 left hash (wide left).
Murray's technique looked sharper than spring. Mossbrucker is wound tightly. Meyer has a powerful leg and potential.
No real separation between Murray and Mossbrucker. Murray still seems to have the more powerful leg. Meyer is right there in leg strength. Race will go beyond the end of camp, I suspect.
Rushing
De'Andre Johnson -- 25 carries for 75 yards (long of 30 came after shaking a tackle against Adrian Clayborn; short but powerful; put in a tough day's work; not shying away from the ACL injury he suffered last fall).
Paki O'Meara -- 14 for 29 yards and two TDs (the primary No. 1 with the first-team offense, with the bubblewrap on Adam Robinson and Jewel Hampton; doesn't have the burst the top-tier backs have)
Brad Rogers -- 4 for 16 yards (lined up at fullback during the week, but seemed to be an RB today, which might be how it plays out with Brandon Wegher out of camp; decent cut and to the hole; did fumble once, the only one of the day).
Jewel Hampton -- 4 for 12 with two TDs (didn't seen any real action; fell to the turf just once; was live during goalline, when he burst in from the 2 twice)
Adam Robinson -- 3 for 8 (no real action; Robinson and Hampton are Iowa's backs, clearly on a different level than anyone else)
Paul Chaney -- 1 for 2 (end around)
Derrell Johnson-Koulianos -- 1 for 7 (end around)
Robinson seems to be the No. 1. Hampton is full go, coming back from the ACL blowout he suffered last June. This team could use Brandon Wegher. No question. Johnson is a developmental player. He's not a homerun back, but he's got above average strength. Tried to hit a lot of cutbacks that weren't there. Rogers is a brute once he gets going. The receivers got into the mix.
Passing
Ricky Stanzi -- 12 of 20 for 115 yards (the senior completed his first six attempts, kind of like the way he starts during a real game; made use of the RBs in the flat).
James Vandenberg -- 9 0f 18 for 96 yards (the clear No. 2; move the team well during two-minute drill; a very capable backup).
John Wienke -- 0 for 6 (tough day going against Iowa's No. 1 D quite a bit)
A.J. Derby -- 5 of 17 for 33 yards and a TD (put a nice pass on TE Jonathan Gimm for a 2-yard TD in goalline drills; looked like a true freshman; had a few chances for big completions but overthrew a few guys; coaches seem to have annointed him as the No. 3 as far as reps go, but it push came to shove, Wienke would probably play).
Receiving
WR Keenan Davis -- 2 for 22 with a drop
WR Donny Nordmann -- 1 for 7
WR Kevonte Martin-Manley 2 for 19
FB Brett Morse 1-4
RB Adam Robinson 2-13
RB Jewel Hampton 1-13
WR Colin Sandeman 4-31
WR Marvin McNutt 2-25
WR Paul Chaney 4-48
WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos 1-12
TE C.J. Fiedorowicz 2-12
TE Jonathan Gimm 1-2 with a 2-yard TD
TE Brad Herman 1-8 with a drop
RB Paki O'Meara 1-6
TE Zach Derby 1-11
Sandeman and Chaney did a lot of business. McNutt and DJK stretched catches for 46-yard TDs, but they might've also been tackled. There really was no tackling Saturday. Don't recall any balls thrown TE Allen Reisner's way. During his postpractice, Ferentz said he really likes the wide receivers.
Sacks
Not really a stat worth keeping. Clayborn had three. There were at least seven other coverage sacks.
Penalties
Four false starts on the O-line
Late hit 15-yarder on Collin Sleeper
Fumble
Brad Rogers was stripped; true freshman defensive back B.J. Lowery recovered.
Interceptions
On the second play of the day, sophomore cornerback Greg Castillo, who stepped in for injured Shaun Prater, picked off QB John Wienke and returned it 54 yards for a TD.
Blocked FG
Clayborn got to Daniel Murray's 42-yarder and might've returned it for a TD if the whistles didn't blow the play dead.
Out and injured
Not dressed: freshman DT Anthony Ferguson, freshman DT Scott Covert, sophomore DE Joe Gaglione, freshman WR Don Shumpert, DB Jordan Price and freshman RB Marcus Coker.
No specifics given on all the above except Coker, who Ferentz said is expected back in one to two weeks with a shoulder injury.
Obviously, sophomore running back Brandon Wegher wasn't at practice. He's been out since Saturday. Ferentz said the door is open for a return. The absence is due to personal reasons.
Tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz left late with what looked to be a rib injury. It looked like he was tackled on top of the ball after an interception.
Cornerback Shaun Prater dressed and warmed up, but pulled up with a leg muscle strain and didn't participate in practice. Ferentz said he's had a muscle strain that he's "been dealing with. He's been practicing pretty well, but we're going to be smart with him. He pulled up at the beginning of practice."
Positional
Freshman Dakota Getz has moved from TE to outside linebacker.
Freshman Austin Vier has moved from QB to TE.
