University Heights plan out of character
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 25, 2010 12:05 am
I have been following the ongoing discussions of development pressures that have occupied University Heights for the 10 years I have lived there. Because of the charming nature of our housing stock and quiet residential feel of this very small single-family cluster of homes, developers have pressured us continually to infill more land. The existing high-density nature of what surrounds us is already a threat to the quality of life and aesthetic charm of our tiny community.
I am opposed to the current Jeff Maxwell proposal for a rezoning and eventual planned unit development on the site of St. Andrews Church. This developer doesn't seem to care that his massive development is completely out of character with our community.
The majority of the University Heights City Council is not responsive to the desires of fully half our community who oppose this development. Also, our zoning commission voted majority disapproval of the request to rezone the property.
I favor single-family dwellings similar to existing homes, or scaled-back compromise proposals such as the Bauer plan.
