Sentencing in death of child a disgrace

I was outraged after hearing the 10-year sentence that Lee Muldoon received in the death of Skylar Inman. Apparently her life was worth only 10 years in prison. This poor little girl had 130 bruises on her body.
All parties involved in the legal case should be hanging their heads in shame. I cannot believe that a person can plea bargain to a lesser crime than murder. How in the world can a 2-year-old child protect herself against child abuse and eventually being beaten to death?
Also, if other family members were involved, they should be punished harshly for failing to protect Skylar. Can't the legislators pass some kind of law that will help protect children against these crimes and certainly not allow child murderers and abusers to plea bargain for a lesser crime?
