No one’s profiting from river program

In response to Merle Wilson's latest diatribe (Aug. 17 letter) about the “new kids on the block” laying “siege” to the Wapsipinicon River, I offer a few pertinent facts.
Darrin Siefken was asked to spearhead this program by the state because of his qualifications as a naturalist, a county extension education director and a natural resources instructor. He stands to make little money from this venture as his shop is located in Waverly. He has a sincere love for the outdoors.
The goal of Wapsi Wilds is to promote “eco-tourism” on the Wapsi. The benefactors of this program will be the businesses in the community - restaurants, motels, bait shops, canoe liveries and even the local hardware store. This program is being used as a pilot by the state to get people out to enjoy our natural resources responsibly. It is a way for others to see what a great recreational opportunity we have flowing through the center of our city.
As far as Wilson's claim that Iowa Department of Natural Resources stands to profit from this program, he should have done his homework. Canoes, kayaks and inflatables are not required to be titled or licensed by the DNR.
As far as litter along the river goes, last year I was part of a cleanup effort on the Wapsi organized by Tony Bengston that consisted solely of canoes and my solitary kayak. I didn't see Wilson there. Actions speak louder than words.
