Iowa City High hosts Cedar Rapids Kennedy tonight in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle. The Little Hawks are coming off a key win against Cedar Rapids Xavier, while Kennedy looks to follow up their first win of the season with an upset victory.
Fans gathered in the high school parking lot. They were adorned in City High gear, pumping music and grilling food. Fun to see the fan support like this. A group of guys reminded me of David Putty from Seinfeld fame. They wore body paint, spelling out City High. Hey, "Got to support the team."Not so fast. Some of these Iowa City High student tailgaters have any different idea. They spell and shout who they think will win.
By the way, City High won the sophomore game 19-13, and we're due to start the varsity game about 7:35 p.m.Kennedy will kick off and we're underway witha touchback. After the two trade possessions, City High recovers a fumble on the Kennedy 13. Four plays later, Ronald Thompson bulls in off the left side for a 3-yd TD run. 7-0 ICH with 5:30 to go in first.Kennedy drives to the ICH 20 but misses a field goal wide left. City High took over on their own 17 with 2:27 to go in the half. McNulty marched them down the field hitting Connor Alberhasky on consecutive pass plays for 13 and 15 yards. A big 18-yd run by McNulty is aided by a horse-collar tackle penalty by Kennedy. Next play, McNulty runs in from the 13 with a nice juke move on a defender. We've reached halftime with ICH up 21-0.Not much action in the third. We were scoreless, but City High ended the quarter with a 2nd-and-5 at the Kennedy 13.Iowa City High wins 21-0.
