Oct. 2, 2010 4:03 pm
The band is belting out tunes on the field. We're five minutes from kickoff.
UNI is looking to rebound from a disappointing 27-0 loss at ISU. SDSU is coming off a 17-3 loss at Nebraska. The Panthers are 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. SDSU is winless in its three games this season, including a 24-14 to MVFC foe Illinois St.
Both teams are 3-and-out on their first possession with both QB's (UNI Rennie and SDSU Thomas O'Brien), nearly throwing INTs.
Zach Davis is in now at QB for UNI. His first pass is a completion on 3rd-and-4, hitting Montari Leonard on a 5-yd out.
Panthers march down field, getting to SDSU 28 before ending it with a missed field goal. UNI mixing in Rennie and Davis. Not just by series, but play-to-play in the last series.
SDSU drives into UNI territory and runs a well conceived screen to Tyler Duffy only to have the ball ripped out by Andre martina nd recovered by LJ Fort. The feat is short-lived as SDSU snags an INT on the first play from scrimmage and has the ball 1st-and-10 from UNI 30.
SDSU faces a 3rd-and-4 at the end of the 1st.
SDSU makes 41-yd FG, but illegal formation penalty negates it. 46-yd attempt is no good and SDSU's first first-half points of the season are taken off board.
UNI takes over and gets a big 65-yard run from Rennie to go to SDSU 6. Rennie fumbles on 1st and goal but recovers. He scores on a 4th and goal from the one on a sneak. UNI up, 7-0, with 12:26 left in 2nd Quarter.
SDSU takes over with 6:08 to go in 2nd. Six runs and four pass plays later Jackrabbits have the ball 2nd and goal on the UNI 8 with :28 to go in half. Looks like they'll have their first first-half points of the season after all.
Well, Guess not. After a timeout, UNI gets pressure on QB Thomas O'Brien, who lofts up a floating pass while back-peddling from the rush. It's picked off by a leaping Andre Martin for a touchback. UNI up 7-0 with 23 seconds to go.
UNI kneels down and takes the 7-0 lead into the locker room.
SDSU takes opening drive 77 yards and scores on an O'brien pass to Tyrel Kool for 10 yards. 7-7.
UNI answers with a 68-yard drive that took 5:376, capped by a Rennie 8-yd run. UNI up 14-7 with 6:10 to go.
UNI hasn't lost a fumble and just the one interception that didn't result in any points for SDSU. So far, turnover demons have been exorcised.
SDSU drives down the field, but Andre Martin jumps for a floating pass at the end zone and gets second INT of the game for another touchback.
UNI drives 64 yards on 16 plays and eats up 7:06 on clock. Hallgren hits 33-yd FG for 17-7 UNI lead with 12:20 to go in game.
O'Brien finds Colin Cochart for a 6-yd TD pass. SDSU pulls within 17-14 with 2:30 to go after 9-play, 77-yard drive.
