Oct. 4, 2010 8:01 am
The Williamsburg Raiders have been waiting a long time for this week, this game.Top-ranked Williamsburg (6-0, 4-0) takes on No. 7 Solon (5-1, 4-0) in a key 3A District 6 game Friday at Solon.“As soon as the districts were set last spring, this game was circled on our schedule - in the weight room, in the locker room,” said Williamsburg Coach Curt Ritchie.Williamsburg warmed up for the showdown with a 62-19 victory over Benton Community. It wasn't as easy as the score would indicate; it was 21-19 in the third quarter before the Raiders scored 41 straight points and ran away.“We turned the ball over three times in the first half. We started taking care of the ball, got rid of the penalties and got some of those turnovers back,” Ritchie said. The Raiders netted 538 yards on 47 plays from scrimmage. Kelly O'Rourke passed for 232 yards.Solon, which moved up a this year class after claiming three straight 2A state titles, won at South Tama, 47-7.In other Week 7 showdowns of note, Cedar Rapids Washington (5-1) travels to Linn-Mar (6-0) in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle while Turkey Valley (6-0, 4-0) meets Starmont (6-0, 4-0) at Arlington in a game that should decide the 1A-5 title.
