Coralville Fire Department responded to 1507 Brown Deer Road in Coralville around 10 a.m. Thursday morning for a report of smoke coming from the basement of the home.
Upon arrival, firemen found flames on the floor and walls of the basement. Coralville fire chief Dave Stannard said the fire was contained to the basement, but there was significant damage to the basement. He added there may be minor smoke damage to parts of the upstairs of the home.
There was one woman home when the fire began, but she was not injured from the blaze. Stannard said the woman smelled smoke and called the emergency line after seeing smoke coming from the basement.
Stannard said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but added it appears to have started around a fish tank. He said they have seen fish tanks cause fires in the past.
There were five fire engines who arrived on the scene, including one from North Liberty Fire Department.
