Fort Madison inmate found dead
Prison officials say a Spirit Lake man who stabbed his mother has died at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.
Department of Corrections spokesman Fred Scaletta told The Des Moines Register that 23-year-old Jeffrey Wittler died over the weekend. Scaletta would not comment on the cause of death pending an autopsy.
Wittler was charged in 2009 with attempted murder and other felony charges. He was accused of assaulting his mother with a knife, causing serious injuries.
Wittler was later convicted of lesser charges of willful injury and going armed with intent.
