Casey’s to demo, rebuild Mount Vernon Road store

The Casey's General Store at 3349 Mount Vernon Road SE that closed earlier this month will soon be coming down to make way for a new and improved store, company officials say.

The new store expected to open early next year will be the company's new store format, Chief Financial Officer Bill Walljasper said on Thursday, Oct. 14.  That format includes a made-to-order sub sandwich counter, self-serve ice cream, expanded coffee counter, and seating area.

Walljasper said the Mount Vernon Road project will also expand the number of gas pumps. The existing car wash will be demolished and replaced with a newer car wash.

The Mount Vernon Road convenience store was part of Casey's acquisition of Nordstrom Oil Co.'s HandiMart convenience store chain, making Casey's the largest player in the Cedar Rapids convenience store market.

“Cedar Rapids has been a very good community for us,” Walljasper said.
