CEDAR RAPIDS - Iowa City West went to its best play over and over and over again, and the last time helped seal its biggest win under head coach Brian Sauser. The Trojans ran their 415 Hawkeye, a running play, 45 times and Charles Rogers broke the final one for a game-winning touchdown.West scored took the lead on Rogers' 31-yard touchdown run with 1:37 left in the game to upset No. 10 Cedar Rapids Washington, 14-13, in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest Friday night at Kingston Stadium. The win snapped a two-game losing streak and improve West's record to 4-4. More importantly, it was a win against a regular playoff team."That's probably the biggest win we've had in my three years here," Sauser said. "That's our first win against upper-division team that has a winning record."We really needed a win like this."The way they did it was as impressive. West stayed poised, despite trailing late. The Trojans cahnces for a win seemed to diminish when they drove to the Washington 7 but were stuffed on fourth down turning the ball over with a few minutes to play.Rogers was confident he'd get another opportunity to run 415 Hawkeye."I wasn't hoping for another chance. I knew we were going to get another chance," said Rogers, praising the defense's performance all game. "When we got the ball back, I already knew. "I told the offense on the sideline, 'get ready because we're going to win this game,'"Rogers made good on his promise when West took over on the Warriors 46. After a short run and Rogers hit Dondre Alexander for a 13-yard gain, Rogers followed running back Richard Bryant up the middle, read a block on the zone run play and burst up the middle and dashed to the end zone for the winning score. The play calls for Rogers to make one read and decide to hand off to a back or keep it. He got the block he needed from Bryant and was off to the races."Daylight," Rogers said about his thoughts when he broke through the first line of defense. "We won the game."The West defense contained Washington's Alex Carr and helped seal the win with a late stand deep in Warrior territory and an interception by Alexander to end the Warriors' comeback bid."They absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage," Sauser said. "That's the best anyone's played against Alex Carr all year. I couldn't be prouder of our guys."Rogers also gave West and early lead. The Trojans were efficient, scoring on its opening drive set up on a Mark Plath interception on the fifth play of the game. Charles Rogers guided the Trojans down the field, marching 69 yards on 16 plays. West converted four third downs and then converted a 4th-and-goal from the 1 when Rogers plunged in to pu West up 7-0.Rogers finished with 98 yards on 25 carries and threw for 150 yards. Alexander was a key recipient of six Rogers passes for 128 yards."Charles had one of his guttiest performances. He's pretty banged up," Sauser said adding, "Dondre had some nice catches."Washington relied heavily on Carr again. He still had a strong performance, rushing for 203 yards on 27 carries. He gave the Warriors a 13-7 lead with 2:43 left to go in the third, rushing 12 times, including a 6-yard touchdown, in a 13-play, 80-yard drive. He also guided the Warriors to their first score, rushing four times for 84 yards, setting up Quinn Vincent's 1-yard plunge to cut the West lead t0 7-6 in the second quarter.Washington drops to 5-3, suffering its third straight loss.
