Three people were rescued by Iowa City emergency crews after a canoe tipped over about 30 yards from land Sunday afternoon.
According to a release from the Iowa City Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched to Sand Lake Pond, located just west of the intersection of Gilbert Street and Sycamore Street, at 1:26 p.m. for a report of people in the water from a capsized boat. Upon arrival, three people were identified clinging to an over-turned canoe with no life jackets.
Iowa City firemen used inflatable boats, also called banana boats, to reach the patients. The patients were given flotation devices and were pulled to shore with a rescue rope that was attached to a boat.
Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies provided a boat and assisted with the recovery of the canoe, the release said. Of the three patients, two were male and one female. The female patient was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for further medical care.
