Solon defense too much again for Williamsburg

SOLON - They play brief sound bites of songs between a lot of plays over the public-address system at Solon. It's more minor league baseball than prep football, but whatever. There's some AC-DC and Guns N' Roses, as you'd expect, and even a little K.C. & The Sunshine Band. They didn't play the obvious one, though.Where was “The Beat Goes On?” Because it does around here.“Words can't even describe,” said linebacker A.J. Brumwell after his team's 19-0 shutout of Williamsburg last night in a Class 3A playoff quarterfinal. “Moving up from 2A to 3A, being doubted by everybody, then coming out and showing everybody that we can do it ...”Solon (11-1) came into the season off three consecutive Class 2A titles, but a lot of folks thought it would get its comeuppance with the jump up a class. So much for that. The Spartans play Pella (12-0) in a state semifinal Monday at the UNI-Dome. The drive for four straight is very much alive.“After our Week Two loss to (Iowa City) Regina, nobody really thought we could do this,” said quarterback J.J. Hanus, who threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes. “But we proved to them we could. We had to regroup, and we did.”Solon won the regular-season district matchup in early October between these two, 22-7, and this one followed that script. Williamsburg (10-2) could do little offensively in either game, particularly last night, where it didn't even secure a first down until 4:38 remained in the third quarter. The Raiders never got anything going, being limited to 169 total yards and committing four turnovers: two fumbles and two interceptions. You can't win, especially in the postseason, with those kinds of numbers.“Coming in, we knew we had to be physical with them,” Brumwell said. “We were the first time, but we knew they were going to throw some different things at us this time. We just had to be physical and shut down their offense. We did that.”“You've got to give them credit. They shut us down two times, and nobody else really did all year,” said Williamsburg Coach Curt Ritchie. “Just too many penalties tonight and too many turnovers. We just couldn't get anything going at all.”Solon took just a 3-0 lead into halftime on a Marshall Koehn 48-yard field goal, but the Spartans took the opening kickoff in the second half and drove for a touchdown (an 11-yard pass from Hanus to Brian Jedlicka) that pretty much sealed this win. Hanus followed with a 14-yard TD pass to Colin Stebral later in the third quarter and Koehn added a 38-yard field goal. He's got 13 this season.“At halftime, we kind of sat there as a staff and did some scheming,” said Solon Coach Kevin Miller. “We knew we were going to have to spread things out and move the football by moving our quarterback into space. Give him the option to either run it or throw it. That was key for us. We needed to get our athletes out into space and get it moving.”Hanus threw for 141 yards and ran for 81. While Derrick Loveless - back from a broken bone in his lower leg - wasn't much of a factor, quick and speedy receivers like Jedlicka and Koehn were.Williamsburg quarterback Kelly O'Rourke threw for 71 yards. Back Bret Waughop ran for 68.Here's the game boxscore and a quick video interview with Brumwell:
