Iowa City police arrested five individuals Monday night after a fight broke out over who belongs to the best gang.
According to criminal complaints, police responded to 2470 Lakeside Drive on a report of people fighting and loud partying. Upon arrival, police saw several people retreat to Apt. No. 12 in the building.
After the defendants fled to the apartment, police said the people inside continued to “yell and scream at each other about who belonged to the better street gang.”
Police were able to enter the apartment after someone stepped outside the front door, not realizing police were on the premises. Officers were able to disperse the party once inside the apartment.
Police added they attempted to enter the same apartment earlier in the night for a previous noise complaint, but the people inside said they were not coming in unless they kicked down the door.
Three residents, Shavonda S. Archer-Kyei, 26, Aaron D. Mitchell, 33, and Craig D. Smith, 39, were charged with disorderly conduct. Another man, Godfrey Freeman, 35, of 1132 Melrose Ave., was charged with disorderly conduct and interference with official acts.
Police also charged Gatha J. Green, 39, with public intoxication after they found her showing signs of intoxication outside of the building.
All five subjects were taken to the Johnson County Jail and have been released.
