McCaffery can't talk about recruits ... yet
Nov. 10, 2010 2:33 pm
IOWA CITY - Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery seemed perturbed Wednesday when he couldn't talk about his two additions for 2011 -- guard Josh Oglesby and forward Aaron White.
The basketball office had yet to receive either player's letter of intent by his 2 p.m. news conference. Oglesby signed his letter at 12:30 p.m. at Cedar Rapids Washington High School but McCaffery had not received it by his news conference. White confirmed to SourceMedia Group on Wednesday that he'll sign his letter on Friday when more of his family will be able to attend.
"No I'm not," McCaffery replied when asked if he was at liberty to talk about his recruits.
McCaffery did talk a little about recruiting, such as the importance of picking up in-state recruits.
"I think for a lot of reasons, I think getting in-state recruit is important," he said. "But it's more important that that person can be able to play. I think sometimes it can be a negative if you're signing kids that don't end up being as good as we had hoped. I don't think that will be the case here."
Oglesby, who stands 6-foot-5, averaged 16.2 points and 5.1 rebounds last year for the Warriors. White, a native of Strongsville, Ohio, averaged 18.8 points last year.
Wednesday is the first day recruits can sign letter of intent to play college basketball for an institution. Iowa will have at least two more scholarships available for the 2011 season.
