A janitor at a Cedar Rapids credit union noticed something fishy Tuesday evening and led police to the scene of a robbery.
Officers went to Collins Community Credit Union, 1755 First Ave. SE, around 8:30 p.m. when the janitor reported two suspicious men in the parking lot. He told a dispatcher the men approached him and asked to use a phone, and now they were in the alley by some bushes.
When police arrived, they saw two people running away.
Police determined Dana Altorfer, 23, of Marion, had driven up to the ATM when she was approached by a man who asked to use her phone. She did not know the man, but allowed him to get in her car, Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said.
Two other people appeared and got into the back seat of Altorfer's car. One produced what Altorfer believed was a gun and demanded money, according to the police report. Altorfer handed it over and the suspects ran off, police said.
Altorfer was not hurt, police said. Officers recovered a BB gun in the area that belonged to the suspects.
The suspect who initially approached Altorfer was described as a black male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt. No other description was available.
No arrests have been made. Police continue to investigate.
