Mike Hlas' AP Top 25 poll ballot for Week 11
Mike Hlas Nov. 14, 2010 12:10 pm
I wrestled with moving Auburn ahead of TCU to No. 2. But ... this year winning at San Diego State is every bit as impressive (if not more) than winning at home against Georgia. San Diego State was 51 seconds from winning at Missouri earlier this year. San Diego State is very good.
On with the show:
1. Oregon (10-0). I would also suggest winning at California is more impressive than beating Georgia at home.
2. Auburn (11-0).
3. TCU (11-0).
4. Boise State (9-0). At Nevada on Nov. 26. Careful, Broncos.
5. Wisconsin (9-1). I voted it the best one-loss team in the nation last week and stand by that.
6. LSU (9-1). Congrats on defeating Louisiana-Monroe to prove in-state superiority.
7. Stanford (9-1). Struggled to win at Arizona State. Is at Cal next week. That's where I'd put College GameDay, ESPN.
8. Ohio State (9-1). Same old November Buckeyes, it looks like.
9. Nebraska (9-1). The Huskers seem to play to the level of their opposition. Well, near the level of their opposition.
10. Oklahoma State (9-1). Called off the dogs at Texas after opening a 33-3 lead. Always good to show the Longhorns some tender mercies.
11. Alabama (8-2). Everyone's looking forward to Saturday's Georgia State-Alabama showdown, especially since Georgia State is fresh off a 23-17 win over Lamar.
12. Michigan State (9-1). MSU is at Penn State on Nov. 27. Spartans have lost eight straight to the Nittanies.
13. Arkansas (8-2). Wins over Texas A&M and South Carolina are looking better all the time.
14. Virginia Tech (8-2). Eight straight victories. At Miami Saturday.
15. Missouri (8-2): If Tigers finish out with wins over Iowa State and Kansas, they'll be, well ... 10-2.
16. Nevada (9-1). Comparative scores are a joke, but the Wolfpack mauled Cal while Oregon beat the Bears by two points.
17. Texas A&M (7-3). Four straight wins, and the last two were real good ones (Oklahoma, at Baylor).
18. Oklahoma (8-2). Now the homestretch -- games at Baylor and Oklahoma State.
19. USC (7-3). For a team with nothing to play for bowl-wise, Trojans have been mighty competitive. They clipped Arizona in Tucson Saturday night.
20. South Carolina (7-3). They beat Alabama, they lose to Kentucky. They get routed at home by Arkansas, they smash Florida on the road.
21. Northern Illinois (8-2). Seven straight wins and getting stronger every week.
22. Miami (7-3). Another Jekyll-and-Hyde outfit, but pounded Georgia Tech in Atlanta Saturday.
23. Iowa (7-3). Why Iowa ahead of Northwestern, which also is 7-3? It was a one-score game on the road, but for overall performance, Iowa has wins at Michigan, vs. Penn State, vs. Michigan State. Northwestern's Big Ten wins were against Minnesota, Indiana and, uh, Iowa, and the Wildcats lost at home to Purdue.
24. Temple (8-2). Best team in Philadelphia. Though the Eagles are tough when Michael Vick is healthy.
25. Tulsa (7-3). Four consecutive wins, including road triumphs against Notre Dame and Houston. Only one loss by more than a field goal, and that to Oklahoma State. But mainly, I like to add another team to "also receiving votes" and watch the rest of the nation jump aboard in weeks to come.
