Senators no longer thoughtful, respectful
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 17, 2010 12:54 pm
Reports tell us that Sen. Mitch McConnell has made it his ultimate goal to “see that President Obama is a one-term president.” We can thank him for his honesty and forthrightness. Perhaps his constituency sent him to Washington, D.C., to do just that.
But those of us who studied history (and civics) a long time ago had a different vision of senators. We thought they were thoughtful members of Congress, higher in rank than members of the House of Representatives and almost statesmanlike in their conduct. They respectfully debated issues and worked tirelessly for the good of the country.
That quaint vision may no longer be in fashion.
There is a disjunction between the past and our future. If not the Constitution, what is to be the model for today?
While Sen. McConnell believes he is doing the will of the people, he does not speak for me. I respect President Obama and would like to see him carry out our policies with the cooperation of a bipartisan Congress. Just because it is 2010, why should we settle for less?
