All dollar denominations should be accepted

I am trying to absorb the idea that a business can refuse to accept certain “Federal Reserve note” denominations when selling its products to us. I recently submitted a $100 note (it was the only cash I had) for a purchase at a local establishment (national fast food outlet). I was informed they would only accept $20 bills or smaller.
Is the $100 bill tainted in some way that it should be recalled by our government? Are we so wrapped up in trillion-dollar discussions that the hundred is about as important as the penny? Our banks distribute the $100 bills and I received this one thinking I could purchase $100 worth of product or services.
This feels to me like another change that was/is out of our control. What will we do with our hundreds when McDonalds decides to only accept the (Chinese) yuan renminbi for a McRib? By the way, it will require 664.15 yuan renminbis for each hundred today, but probably a lot fewer by tomorrow.
