Coverage of NAACP event in paper was disappointing

When I read the review of the NAACP 68th Annual Freedom Banquet titled “All jazzed up,” I was sorely disappointed. Shame on The Gazette for demeaning the NAACP as if it were not a large part of Cedar Rapids and its history. Street fights and shootings generally receive much more press.
The NAACP is one of the oldest civil rights organizations in the United States pursuing social justice for all. The community and businesses of our area are made stronger through the efforts of the NAACP. The youth council of the organization has won many awards because this group of dedicated residents realizes the importance of encouraging our youths to do their best and to aim high in life. Your article even slighted the keynote speaker, Carole Bernard, merely defining her as a longtime Cedar Rapids educator. She is so much more than that. There was not even a mention of the theme for this year's event, “One nation working together.”
I am sorry that The Gazette elected to practically ignore this historic, community-based event.
