We need to protect infrastructure

Regarding the Nov. 30 story titled “Agricultural loads destroying rural roads, bridges”:
In 1997, I attended a lecture by a state transportation official who foresaw Iowa's lattice of farm roads and bridges moving toward an upkeep crisis.
The official suggested an overlay of plantation railroads for the movement of “heavy metal” while reserving the horse and buggy infrastructure for horses and buggies.
To my knowledge, the idea never went anywhere. Ask your state lawmaker for an economic feasibility study or the outcome of such a study. County engineers deserve hurrahs for stretching the buck instead of passing it.
