Speed cameras’ effects better than deaths

I read the letters and enjoy the ones arguing against the use of speed control cameras in Cedar Rapids. The arguments get sillier with time:
-- “The cameras are a secret government tax.” Yes, they are a tax on all those who don't believe the law applies to them.
-- “They are secret speed traps for out-of-towners.” Oh, I dunno, all of them have signs posted well in advance.
-- “They will stifle businesses moving into Cedar Rapids.” Perhaps we should have a campaign: Move to Cedar Rapids and break all the laws you want, we don't care.
-- “This is an illegal form of government surveillance.” It is the job of the police to monitor traffic and stop those who are a danger to others. Persistent speeders are just that. Modern tools for modern times.
I am glad the cameras are here, but then, I obey the laws. I drive past the one on 42nd Street and Edgewood Road NE several times a day. Those cameras have slowed the traffic considerably, which I welcome.
I have two children who attend Kennedy High School and drive through that intersection. I don't want fools flying through there at 70 mph like they used to. If it takes 15 to 20 costly tickets to slow you down, that's fine by me. Sure beats a fatality.
