ACCOUNTABILITY: Anthony Koehlhoeffer, already accused of four serious crimes, including assault on a police officer, now faces more charges after escaping University of Iowa Hospitals and leading law officers on a wild 19-hour chase Tuesday before his capture in Bettendorf. Hospital officials say they can't be responsible for custody of a prisoner. Jefferson County says a deputy brought the suspect to the hospital and left after someone there signed for custody. Public safety was compromised - an inmate with violent history wasn't guarded or otherwise restrained. Why?

MISSPENT: The state auditor uncovered $67,000 in improper purchases linked to one of six Iowa offices created in 2004 to beef up exchange of intelligence information. The Atlantic office was closed a year ago because of lax accounting practices. Reimbursement? At least.

HUMBUG: A kitchen fire forced the Matthew and Rachele Brownfield family of Cedar Rapids to a hotel the night of Dec. 10. When they returned the next morning to clean up the damage, they found the home ransacked, their Christmas presents and other valuables gone. A neighbor who police say offered help at the fire scene was arrested Wednesday.
