“MOST SECURE”: Cedar Rapids and Iowa City tend to do well in the many national ratings of places to live. The latest: Cedar Rapids is the state's city ranked as one of the nation's 20 most secure places to live among metropolitan areas between 150,000 and 500,000 population. Cedar Rapids is 18th, says a Farmers Insurance Group study compiled by database expert bestplaces.net. Rankings are based on crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, air quality, environmental hazards, terrorist threats, life expectancy and jobless numbers. IOWA HERO: In death, Iowa's Bob Feller reminded us of heroic achievements on the baseball diamond and service to country. Feller, who died Wednesday at age 92, was one of baseball's greatest pitchers, fiercely proud and patriotic. The Hall of Famer earned several medals as a Navy gun captain after enlisting - giving up four years in mid-career.
