Law-abiding hunting is not appalling at all
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I am writing in response to Celeste Smiskol's Dec. 3 letter, “No sensitivity toward animal lovers, children.” Hunting has been a way of life since man walked the earth. However, hunting today is looked at more as a leisure sport. Hunting helps control the deer population, this helps reduce accidents involving deer.
Hunting or harvesting deer can also help feed needy families. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources promoted HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger), which provides deer meat for families with the help of food pantries and meat lockers. Last year, more than 7,000 deer were donated.
If a hunter is ethically abiding by the law, there is nothing to be appalled about.
