Corbett, C.R. don’t deserve tax extension

The local-option sales tax was passed for five years to be used for property tax relief and for the acquisition of flood-damaged housing. One of the selling points for its approval was its sunset clause. Now Mayor Ron Corbett and his cronies want to extend the local-option sales tax another 20 years for the protection of the west side. If the city acquired all of the flood-affected housing and the Czech Museum is moved, what is left to protect?
You need to consider how wisely the council has used this money so far. Have you seen a line item reduction in your property taxes? That is what it is supposed to be used for. Instead, they have opted to give it away in the form of an “unmet needs” giveaway, up to $10,000 per household. I'm sure those who received that will vote for it.
The cities of Marion and Hiawatha are considering joining in with Corbett. Hiawatha city leaders especially need to think about how Corbett has treated them so far - remember the Go Daddy fiasco? It would be foolish to follow his lead on this.
There is no way I want to give politicians more of my money to spend and for a longer period.
