The recent events in Arizona certainly qualify as a national tragedy. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, according to those who knew her well, is the kind of person from whom this country derives great benefit. Surely, we all wish her the best recovery possible. However, the media and political theater that followed the shootings would probably make her uneasy. if not downright disgusted.
When the next border patrol officer is killed in combat with one drug cartel or another, we should all expect the network and cable news programs to “cover” the story intensely for days on end. We should also expect the president and first lady to attend their memorial service in person. Right?
Don't hold your breath.
