Stop-smoking programs vital to Iowa health

It is always encouraging to see our elected officials focus on the overall health of Iowans. That is why Gov. Terry Branstad's comments at the kickoff of “Live Healthy Iowa” this month were especially insightful. His desire to do what he can to help make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation and Des Moines the “Wellness Capitol of the World” is inspiring.
Which is why the efforts in the Iowa House of Representatives to eliminate smoking cessation efforts and youth tobacco prevention at the state level is so disheartening! How can we be the healthiest state in the nation and not help Iowans quit tobacco? How can we overlook the importance of preventing future smokers by empowering children to make good decisions?
These programs are vital to reducing cancer and heart disease rates and to prevent youth tobacco use and help smokers quit.
I hope Gov. Branstad remembers his desire to elevate Iowa's health status when he reviews proposals to eliminate anti-tobacco programs.
