CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) - America's last surviving World War I veteran is celebrating his 110th birthday.
Frank Woodruff Buckles of Jefferson County reached the milestone Tuesday.
Michigan filmmaker David DeJonge told The Journal in Martinsburg that the veteran will spend his birthday at home with close family and friends. DeJonge is producing a documentary about Buckles.
Buckles has lobbied for a National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C., and is the oldest person to have ever testified before the U.S. Senate.
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said he has reintroduced legislation that would rededicate the District of Columbia War Memorial as a National World War I Memorial. The bill also would rededicate the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City as the National World War I Museum and Memorial.
