Constitutional law should not be ignored
The Gazette Opinion Staff

This is what you call ironic. Both Gov. Tom Vilsack and Gov. Chet Culver, being head of the executive branch of Iowa government, denied Iowans an opportunity to vote on a marriage amendment being added to the state Constitution.
Then Sen. Mike Gronstal, head of the legislative branch of Iowa government, denied Iowans an opportunity, and even today is obstinately opposing any effort for Iowans to exercise our right to vote on a marriage amendment. Finally, all seven members of Iowa's Supreme Court ignored their responsibility to observe constitutional law when deciding the Varnum case. So, we have all three branches of Iowa government casting aside the Constitution of Iowa to further their own agendas.
Herein is the irony: When everyday Iowans decide they want to impeach the four remaining judges (and Judge Hanson), you have the members of the three branches of Iowa government screaming that there is no constitutional basis to do so. That is ironic, they chose to ignore the constitution to further their own agendas, but when everyday Iowans want to impeach the remaining judges they point to the constitution for protection - ironic!
They set the precedent by ignoring constitutional law, and then turn around and demand that “we” have no right to do the same. Remember this old saying, “What is good for the goose is good for the gander?” Why should we have to observe constitutional law when they didn't?
