Special interests driving downtown ‘vision’

A look at the visionary health of our Cedar Rapids decision-makers reveals a strong self-absorbency syndrome.
It is all about “me” when we see millions and millions of our tax dollars directed to “downtown” projects that will financially benefit only a few - namely the businesses located thereabouts. Building these projects did not result from a groundswell of the citizenry, but rather from the influence of special-interest coalitions. For example, I don't recall voting for entering the hotel business.
It is absurd to see this rush to build a convention center/hotel “monument” in the heart of a cramped, cold, unattractive, inconvenient downtown. Do you think there was wisdom behind other communities building such amenities in convenient, attractive, spacious areas? In other words, if we need it, build it where it will be accommodating to those attending events.
Now we have proposed increases for residential property taxes and utility services. How often do we hear of substantive and implementable spending cuts? Rather, leadership focuses its tunnel vision on squeezing more and more from its citizens.
OK, this position may be an overstatement. After all, part of the new budget proposal includes reducing spending on street and bridge improvements. How out of touch with reality is this proposal? Less spending on our streets. Really?
Moneys not spent on these apparently inferior infrastructure projects are to be expended on “public buildings and facilities.” Interpret this to mean “underfunded downtown projects.”
It's time for more reality, less “vision.”
