Local option sales tax revenues received under a proposed 20-year extension of the one-percent tax in Linn County would go mainly to streets, sidewalks and community center needs.
The Mount Vernon City Council approved a resolution at its meeting Thursday, Feb. 24, calling for a vote of city residents to extend the tax by 20 years, from July 1, 2014 until June 30, 2034.
The resolution calls for the allocation of Mount Vernon's share of the revenue to go 55 percent for streets and city-owned sidewalks, 25 percent for community center, 10 percent for urban renewal and streetscaping and 10 percent for parks and recreational trails.
The vote is to be held on May 3.
City Administrator Mike Beimer said the resolution would be submitted to the county's election commissioner on Friday, Feb. 25.
