HOW MANY TIMES: Charges are pending, again, against Laine Dennison, The North Liberty man - who has 38 in-state speeding convictions, plus several other driving violations - was in Tama County March 7 when his pickup crossed the center line and collided head-on with a minivan, killing its driver, Joseph Starits, whose wife and newborn son were in the vehicle and escaped with no major injuries, police said. Dennison's work driving permit had been revoked Sept. 7. Twice previously he's been convicted of driving while his license was barred. Can't we keep him off the road?

NOT BUDGING: We respect Gov. Branstad sticking to a campaign pledge while under fire. But his January order to stop using state funds on all public projects with legal project labor agreements was a decision presented without convincing data. Mayor Ron Corbett, in his latest bid to save the $15 million I-JOBS state grant toward the Cedar Rapids Convention Complex project - for which the City Council OK'd a PLA in December - has even asked to redirect the I-JOBS money to a non-PLA city project. No dice so far. Come on, Governor - no room for reasonable compromise?
