62 MILES OF LOVE: Spreading awareness about the annual Relay of Life events that raise money to fight cancer is important to Jeff Meeker. So important that the Cornell College volleyball coach ran 65 miles on Wednesday, 10 loops around Mount Vernon. He also honored his mother, who survived a first round of breast cancer for 30 years before another bout took her life in 2008.

RAPTOR SAGA: The incredibly popular website following the bald eagle and eaglets saga high above the Decorah Fish Hatchery has brought widespread recognition to Bob Anderson, who operates the video camera system livestreaming the action to the world. A state biologist called it “the pinnacle or environmental outreach.” But the more significant achievement for the Raptor Resource Project director was restoring falcons to the Mississippi River bluffs after the pesticide DDT nearly erased their presence.

UI HONOR: University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recently received a silver medal of honor from the federal health officials for achieving national organ donor goals for consent rates, donation after cardiac death and number of organs transplanted per donor.
