A Cedar Rapids man has been charged with child endangerment after he tried to throw his 6-month-old daughter against a wall, police said.
Walter O. Chirino-Guardado, 25, of 1410 Bever Ave. SE, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly punched his live-in girlfriend in the face at his residence, and then “picked up their six-month old child and threw her across the living room,” according to a criminal complaint.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said the girlfriend grabbed the child before she hit the wall, and the child was not hurt.
Police said Chirino-Guardado had been upset with the girlfriend and began striking her when he woke up. After he threw the child he continued to hit the girlfriend, Hamblin said. He faces a second charge of assault causing bodily injury for that.
Others at the residence separated the two, and the girlfriend went to police headquarters to report the incident. She had a bruise on her cheek and underneath her chin, police said, but did not need medical treatment.
Officers arrested Chirino-Guardado around 11:30 p.m. Sunday when he arrived at work. He was taken to the Linn County Jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of $5,500 cash bond. Authorities said Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials also filed and order to keep him in jail.
*Because of the ICE hold, Chirino-Guardado's mug shot was not being released.
