Think before voting on tax extension

Before voting for the 1 percent local-option sales tax extension on May 3, take a hard look at the local taxation trends. Our family moved to Cedar Rapids in 2006. Since we arrived, sales tax has increased from 5 percent to 7 percent (a 40 percent increase) and our own property taxes are up almost 19 percent.
Aside from taxes, cost for city utilities (solid waste and water) has increased 12 percent and other necessary items such as home, auto and health insurance have significantly risen in cost. We are in difficult economic times. The middle class is being squeezed more than ever.
Those in favor of the extension also cite the benefit of property tax relief. As I understand, it could slow property tax increases, not actually lower those taxes. But tax is tax. Unless you don't buy anything locally, you will pay higher taxes.
There is the concern, too, that we do not currently know how much funding (for flood protection) we can expect from the state or (perhaps) federal government. What will happen if the funding isn't adequate despite the tax extension?
I urge citizens to consider their own tax burden facts before voting.
