CALM IN THE STORM: David Cornell, veteran air traffic controller at The Eastern Iowa Airport, recently was one of 10 such professionals nationwide to be honored with a National Air Traffic Controllers Archie League safety award. He was recognized for his calm performance that helped a pilot crash land his single-engine aircraft during heavy fog on Jan. 17, 2010, and survive with only a broken arm.

ABLE BACKUP: John Lipsky, a Cedar Rapids Washington High School graduate, last week was named acting managing director of the International Monetary Fund after the IMF's top official, Dominque Strauss-Kahn, was charged with sexual assault of a hotel maid. Lipsky, 64, has been IMF's first deputy managing director and previously was vice chair and chief economist at JP Morgan Investment Bank.

MORE BEST BUDDIES: City High School in Iowa City has one of nearly 1,500 Best Buddies chapters nationwide. The non-profit organization pairs people with intellectual disabilities with mainstream students, helping special education students explore and participate in their high school experience. City High's chapter, four years old, increased 25 percent to involve 104 students this year.
