Work release escapee arrested late Thursday
Jul. 7, 2011 6:20 pm
A man who walked out of a Coralville work release facility has been arrested.
Sam Black, residential supervisor at the Hope House, said Alajuwon Johnson was taken into custody outside a Johnson County motel shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Johnson was serving a five year sentence for shooting and killing an Iowa City woman in 2009. Johnson later accepted a plea deal, which found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Johnson told the police he accidentally shot the victim with a gun he illegally owned, then did not call police because he was worried about outstanding warrants. He later asked a friend to call authorities on his behalf.
On Wednesday, Iowa City police announced they were offering a $1,000 reward for information on Johnson's whereabouts.
Black said Johnson was arrested without incident, and said multiple agencies deserve credit for the arrest.
Johnson has been transported to the Johnson County jail and will not be returning to Hope House.
