Parent redefines ‘empty nest’ phase

This fall I've reached a parental landmark - both of my children will be in college. I've lost track of the number of times someone has said to me, “Cindy, empty nest, how are you doing?” My usual response is, “Really good!”
I look with joy at the intelligent and independent young adults my daughters have become. I look forward to seeing the direction they take in their personal and professional lives. I remind them to relish those college years as a special time in their lives.
Being a parent is the all-time greatest job. However, I feel a sense of accomplishment and a little bit of relief to reach this parenting stage. I don't intend to sign myself out of parenting, but it's more of a time to observe how my children navigate the myriad experiences ahead, reminding them we are here if they need us.
There will be tears as we move our daughters to college this fall. However, rather than referring to it as “empty nest,” I've decided to use “making progress.” The young adults in our lives and on our campus are the future - and I think that future looks very bright.
