Loosen requirements on teachers
The Gazette Opinion Staff

With all of the paperwork, assessments, conferences, meetings, report cards, record keeping and many other obligations, teachers must work so hard to reach each child's needs. Please allow teachers time to teach without all of the above list of requirements, causing stress for students and teachers.
Smaller elementary class size and allowing teachers more time to teach would improve education and discipline and allow teachers more time to meet individual student needs.
After many years of teaching, it is rewarding to hear from past students that, having a teacher who had time to listen to them and help them through their individual learning styles inspired them to become the adults they are today. For example, some years ago a shy, quiet second-grade girl named Melissa Louvar entered my room, too afraid to talk. She disliked school and would not read. Today she teaches in a college, has several college degrees, has co-authored books, and has spoken to Congress (and around the world) about helping children and families. She says that she would not be able to do what she does today if it had not been for having a teacher who had time to listen to her and make her believe in herself.
Teachers today are still making every effort to give the personal positive help to each child, though they are under the stress of all the government requirements. Teachers make a difference. Teaching is the profession that makes all professions possible.
