TANNING RULES: Nearly two-thirds of 53 tanning facilities inspected by Linn County Public Health officials were cited for violations, most of them for allegedly allowing customers to tan longer than specified by manufacturers. Some locations in Jones County were included. In Johnson County, inspectors found more than 40 percent of 46 facilities in violation. County officials say they're working to educate operators on how to better comply.

CHILDREN'S WELFARE: Iowa dropped from sixth to eighth place in the annual KIDS Count national ratings of children's welfare. Three of the state's indicators worsened: percentages of babies born at low birth weight, children living in single-parent families and children living in poverty.

OOPS: Bookkeeping errors led to a $2 million mistake in the Iowa City school district budget. Fortunately, it was money for personnel expenses that was counted twice, no one was paid twice, and it means the district's budget shortfall is less than expected. However, the original budget figure was cited when the district nearly cut 22 teaching positions because of budget shortfalls. Now, an outside auditor will be hired to review the internal process.
